About 3 million of the total 15 million Iranian couples suffer from infertility in the country, the Iranian Javan newspaper reported Oct. 8.
Over 11 million young Iranians are also forecast to miss the chance to childbearing due to increasing average level of marriage age, according to the report.
Iran’s population is ageing rapidly. Over 70 percent of Iran’s population are people of 15 to 64 years, and about one third of Iranians are 25 to 40 years old with half of them unmarried, the report said.
Currently, the country’s fertility rate stands at 1.8 percent.
Last year, Supreme Leader of Iran Ali Khamenei condemned the country's policy on contraception, saying it too closely reflected western lifestyles. Iran's family-planning program went largely unchallenged until former president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad began to criticize the "Two children are enough" slogan.
In April of 2010, he also said that "the country has the potential for a population of 150 million."
Later the Supreme Leader made similar statements, saying that a population of 150 to 200 million would be ideal.
The Iran's administration has curbed the government budget for family planning.
