The students of the private Independent Azerbaijan University (IAU), who have been going on hunger strike for sixteen days, held a press conference today.
The university fourth-year student Elnur Mammadov said 50 students are protesting now. He noted some of the students stopped the strike due to their serious health problems but new ones replaced them in the strike. Mammadov stressed that the Education Ministry deceived them. "So far, we have been told that the issue on the sophomores is being reviewed by court. However, it turned out yesterday that the court is reviewing the issue whether to close the private university," Mammadov said. Sophomore Faig Aliyev said the Education Ministry is not willing to solve their problems. He thinks the Ministry is waiting for decreasing number of students due to the draft next month. "Boys will be drafted next month. So, the strikers will decrease in number after that," he underlined. The protesting students said they will not wait until next month. They allot time for the Ministry to respond to them by June 20. The students say they will collectively give up Azerbaijani citizenship if the problem is not solved by that time. Sophomore Vugar Suleymanov has had health problems and hospitalized today, APA reports.
