In a sign of the shifting media landscape, the bulk of nominees for the new award are produced by newspaper websites.
The U.S. National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced Monday the seven nominees for a new Emmy award that recognizes outstanding news and documentary programming created for new media platforms. The winner will be presented at the News & Documentary Emmy Awards in New York on Sept. 25. In a sign of the shifting media landscape, the bulk of the nominees are programs produced by newspaper websites, not television networks. The website of The New York Times racked up three nominations, including one for a web documentary about Darfur created by Op-Ed columnist Nicholas Kristof. A web-exclusive piece on Bolivia and a broadband interview series with a victim of child pornography were also nominated. The website of the Washington Post was nominated for a web documentary about Azerbaijan and a video podcast about the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. While two cable networks also received nominations - MTV News for a web series about last year's South Asian earthquake and National Geographic for its webcasts about Hurricane Katrina - none of the new media entries from the major television news divisions made the cut. This is the first year that the television academy is giving out an award for programs produced for new media platforms like computers, mobile phones and iPods. So far this year, two other new media Emmys have been handed out - one to America Online for Live 8 on AOL, its coverage of the Live 8 concerts, and another to ESPN.com for the webcast "Off Mikes." /www.latimes.com/
