Azerbaijani gymnast Shakir Shikhaliyev won the license for the Olympic Games to be held this summer in London. He won trips to the Games in the second qualifier tour held in London. Participating in the all-around, he scored 80,532 points, which allowed him to guarantee place in the Olympics, the Azerbaijani Gymnastics Federation reported.

Shikhaliyev became the first gymnast who will represent Azerbaijan in the Olympic Games in this kind of sports. This is a historical success of the Azerbaijan’s sport gymnastics!

The last time our country was represented by gymnast Valery Belenky.  He became the Olympic champion in team championship and a bronze winner in absolute championship in Barcelona. But this was within the national team of the CIS.

”I am extremely happy and proud that I will represent Azerbaijan at the Olympics! I want to express my gratitude to the leadership of our Federation, who believed in me, my coaches and all those who supported me,” Shikhaliyev said.
