International observers praise repeat parliament vote

14 May 2006 [21:22] - TODAY.AZ
Observers from Estonia, Sweden, Germany and Latvia have highly assessed Azerbaijan's by-elections to the Milli Majlis (parliament) held on Saturday.

According to AssA-Irada, Estonian observer Arnold Kimber said the elections were conducted on a high level, with no serious irregularities. He pointed out positive developments since the November 6, 2005 legislative poll.

Werner Munh of Germany also praised the conduct of repeat polls. He said he was content with the elections he observed in constituency No. 9.

"Everything – voter lists and the polling process – was normal. The only concern was low participation. But this problem exists not only in Azerbaijan but also in my country," he said.

Swedish observers concurred that the by-elections were democratic.
