31 May 2006 [15:21] - TODAY.AZ
A meeting on establishment of the Committee of Support for South Azerbaijan National Movement took place on Wednesday.

Head of Central Board of United Azerbaijan Union (UAU), Agil Samadbayli said that the Support Committee has been established by the South Azerbaijan National Revival Movement (SANRM), both wings of the World Azerbaijanis Congress (WAC) and the UAU.

Mr.Samadbayli reported about the recent protests staged by Azerbaijanis in Tabriz, Urmiya, Maragha and several other towns of Iran. Stating that the number of Azerbaijani demonstrators killed and arrested by the government forces is concealed, Samadbayli said the injured are held in military hospitals.

According to APA, Deputy leader of Musavat Party Arif Hajili said the party supports the struggle for freedom in South Azerbaijan (Iran).

"The events in Tabriz and other cities are not Iran's interior affairs. Musavat Party will not be indifferent to the issues related to Azerbaijan," Hajili stressed.

Leader of the Classic Popular Front Party (CPFP) Mirmahmoud Mirelioghlu said Iran is anti-Islamic country, "The state of Azerbaijan today can use all its political opportunities to support our southern compatriots."

Head of the Azerbaijan National Democratic Party Isghender Hamidov stressed the importance of a group of Azerbaijani parliamentarians visiting Iran regarding the current situation. Parliament member Panah Huseyn expressed his support for the struggle of South Azerbaijani Turks, "These processes show that there exists Azerbaijan problem and this should be solved to the benefit of the entire nation."

Editor-in-chief of Yeni Musavat Rauf Arifoghlu said he does not believe the US or the West will support the processes on the south.

"It is obvious that the United States are displaying interest in Kurds most of all. We cannot rely on the US concerning the united Azerbaijan issue," Arifoghlu said.

He also stressed the importance of holding opposition's summit to investigate current problems.
