By Alimat Aliyeva In recent years, the use of scented candles has become increasingly popular, but experts are warning about the potential health risks associated with these candles. Although they are often used to create a pleasant atmosphere, it is said that they can worsen air quality and cause health issues, particularly when lit. The ingredients in scented candles, especially the chemical compounds released during combustion, can be harmful to health, Azernews reports. According to the National Candle Association of the USA, paraffin candles are the most widely used type of candle material worldwide. When burned, paraffin candles release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as benzene, acetaldehyde, and formaldehyde into the air—chemicals that are linked to cancer. Ariful Hake from Kunming Medical University in China points out that toluene, a substance found in some candles, can lead to more serious health effects, such as dizziness and headaches, with prolonged exposure. Amy Brown, a specialist at New York Medical College, acknowledges that the levels of volatile organic compounds in scented candles are lower than those in tobacco smoke or some dyes. However, a 2015 study found that some scented candles can release formaldehyde levels as high as 2098 parts per billion, a concentration considered to be dangerous. Research shows that formaldehyde levels ranging from 0 to 400 parts per billion are considered safe. However, even when candles are not burning, some chemicals can still be released into the air. Experts also emphasize that scented and colored candles pose a higher risk due to their additional chemical additives. To reduce health risks, experts recommend choosing candles made with 100 percent natural ingredients, such as soy or beeswax, instead of paraffin. These natural alternatives not only minimize the release of harmful chemicals but can also offer a safer way to enjoy a pleasant-smelling environment without compromising health. Additionally, it's worth noting that the environmental impact of paraffin candles is also a concern, as they are derived from petroleum. Natural alternatives like soy and beeswax are renewable and biodegradable, offering an eco-friendly solution to traditional candle use.
