"Media freedom is one of the main pillars of a democratic state, and any attack on this freedom it is an attack on democracy itself," Terry Davis, Secretary General of the Council of Europe, said today on the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day, 3 May.
APA has been informed about it from the Information Office of PACE in Baku."As we mark the World Press Freedom Day, let us remember that the right to freedom of expression is a fundamental human right, won at a high cost in the struggle against dictatorships and totalitarianism.
Violence against journalists and other media professionals is a threat to this freedom, an affront to all of us," he continued. "On this day, let us think of all the journalists assassinated, assaulted, disappeared or kidnapped, not only in Iraq and other countries outside Europe, but also here in Europe, and even in our member states," said the Secretary General.
"We must never weaken our efforts to defend the freedom of the media, freedom of expression and information because by doing so, we defend our own right to be informed," he stressed.
