Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov met October 19 with visiting Health Minister of Mexico Julio Frenk.
Frenk said his government nominated him as director general of the World Health Organization, adding his present visit is a part of his election campaign. He pointed out that he met with Health Minister of Azerbaijan and that he hopes for Azerbaijan’s support in the election. Saying Azerbaijan and Mexico have some things in common Frenk noted that both nations are transition economies, have ancient culture and produce oil. According to him, the decision to open Azerbaijan’s embassy in Mexico will strengthen bilateral ties even more. Mammadyarov highly appraised Mexico's activity within poverty reduction and millennium challenges program as well as the conferences on health care problems organized by this country. Head of Foreign Office said Azerbaijan puts a special emphasis to cooperation with the WHO. On the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno Karabakh, Mammadyarov said conflict led to heavy casualties with about a million refugees and internally displaced people still living in the camps. He stressed that Azerbaijan government takes measures to alleviate their sufferings. Minister found a need to raise world community's awareness of this problem. According to Mammadyarov, it is important from the humanitarian and political points of view since the care will raise world community's attention to the conflict. E. Mammadyarov said that Azerbaijan pays a special attention to the cooperation with Mexico and the decision to open the embassy in Mexico is a very important step, and urged the government of Mexico to open the embassy in Azerbaijan.
