The first Deputy Chairman of Milli Majlis (Parliament of Azerbaijan), head of Azerbaijan delegation to NATO PA Ziyafat Asgarov met November 1 with the representatives of European Center for Security Studies (ECSS).
On Azerbaijan's integration to the Euro-Atlantic space, Mr. Asgarov stated that Azerbaijan has cooperated with NATO within the framework of "Partnership for Peace" program since 1994, and the "Individual Partnership Program" (IPP) since 2004. The servicemen of Azerbaijani Armed Forces also take an active part in NATO peacemaking mission throughout the world. Milli Majlis closely cooperates with NATO Parliamentary Assembly as well, he said. First Deputy Chairman gave detailed information on reforms being implemented in the country, including the large-scale projects. Currently, Azerbaijan leads the world in GDP growth rates. But, occupation of over 20% of Azerbaijani lands by Armenians, problems of over one millions refugees and IDPs impede the development, he said. Mr. Asgarov noted that Azerbaijan delegation to NATO PA will again bring up this issue during the Assembly's fall session in Canada. Merijn Hartog, program manager of the European Center for Security Studies thanked for a warm reception and the detailed information. He noted that the center implements Starlink Training Program on Democratic Governance of the Security Sector, aimed to support the reform process in the security and defense field. The trainings are also expected to be conducted in Azerbaijan from early 2007. AzerTAg
