"Hunger strike is an abnormal way. But if the editors who form public opinion see no way out, it means that there are great problems in the sphere of freedom of press," said Andres Herkel, PACE Monitoring Committee co-rapporteur for Azerbaijan.
The co-rapporteur told the APA that during their visit to Azerbaijan last week they discussed the problems of mass media and license of electron mass media with the officials, because of the lack of time they could not meet with the editors holding hunger strike in Azadliq editorial office but discussed the problem with the officials. Mr.Herkel said that they did not come to an agreement on the problem of freedom of press. "OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Miklos Haraszti also thinks so, in the accounts of “Borderless reporters” organization Azerbaijan is on lower level," he said. Mr.Herkel said he was worried about the events happening in the media of Azerbaijan recently and compared them with the events happened in Belarus some years ago. He also added that they will reflect them in their accounts. Mr.Herkel said the initial accounts on the visit will be presented in December. He hopes that Azerbaijani government will stand its position on the accounts within two months and the co-rapporteurs will present their accounts in the session of PACE to be held on April.
