UN General Assembly 3rd committee adopted the draft resolution on the violation of human rights in Iran on the initiative of Canada, EU and the US.
70 states supported the draft, 48 states as well as Azerbaijan were against, and 55 states abstained. Tortures in Iran, discrimination of ethnic minorities, persecution of political opponents, right defenders, journalists and representatives of NGO were reflected in the draft resolution. According to the resolution, sentences do not meet the international standards, cruel and humiliating punishments are applied in Iran. The General Assembly also worries about the mass punishment and a kind of punishment by throwing stones in Iran. The resolution appealed to Iran to join the Convention against Tortures and to stop the violation of human rights and hold the culprits accountable, APA reports. The importance of abolition of all kinds of discrimination (violence against women, religious, ethnic discrimination) and ending the persecution of national minorities – Arabs, Azerbaijanis, Bahais, Balujs, Kurds, Christians, sophists and Sunnites are noted in the resolution.
