Robert Wexler, the influential member of the US congress, representing the Democratic Party, started his official visit to Azerbaijan.
Chairing the Capitol for already six terms, Robert Wexsler is among the 50 most effective congressmen and 50 most influential representatives of the Jewish community of the United states. He is a member of a number of important work groups of the congress including on relations with Israel, Turkey, Taiwan,India and Serbia. His powers also include Azerbaijan.
The program of the visit started today with the meeting with the leaders of Azerbaijan's opposition and will continue with meetings with officials including the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev.
The Day.Az reporter addressed to Eldar Namazov, chairman of the Public Forum "For the sake of Azerbaijan", who participated in the meeting with the opposition leaders, with a request to comment on the talks.
"Congressman R.Wexsler is an influential and prominent figure of the US politics. He played an active role in a number of discussions of issues connected with Azerbaijan in the Capitol hill.
Our meeting focused on the discussion of the current situation in the country and prospects of bilateral relations. We also discussed the forthcoming presidential elections in the country. We focused on the democratic agenda, which we usually discuss at the international meetings in Baku, during our visits to Strasbourg and Brussels-the necessity to introduce amendments to the Electoral Code on basis of recommendations of the Venice Commission, lifting of the factual ban on holding meetings in the capital city, release of imprisoned reporters and political prisoners and other issues".
According to Namazov, the meeting with another guest from the United States-famous senator Richard Lugar is scheduled for the next week.
The meeting with the US congressman was attended by the leader of the Musavat party Isa Gambar, leader of the Liberal Party Lala Shovkat, as well as the chairman of the Popular Front Party Ali Kerimli.
