Head of the Venice Commission Gianni Buquicchio says there are a lot of drawbacks in the Georgian constitution, which should be eradicated through consensus.
The current constitution does not meet western and contemporary criteria, - Gianni Buquicchio has made the corresponding statement at the meeting with NGOs and experts at the Constitutional Commission.
"Georgia has started work on a constitution since the independence, and it is very pity it couldn’t manage to work out an appropriate constitution for 20 years," the Venice Commission President said.
According to him, the new constitution should increase authorities of the executive government and of the Parliament. More autonomy should also be granted to the local self-government.
"There are a lot of tasks and drawbacks and everyone should work on them together. The constitution should be adopted on bases of consensus, and the civil society and political parties should contribute to it," Mr. Buquicchio said.
