21 April 2007 [15:42] - Today.Az
Growing concern, from both the United Nations General Assembly and the World Health Assembly, regarding the problem of road traffic injuries has resulted in the introduction of Global Road Safety Week which will take place from 23 to 29 April 2007 in Azerbaijani capital, Baku.

Because children and young people constitute a major group at risk of death, injury and disability on the roads, this Week will be dedicated to the 'young road-user.' Globally, traffic accidents are the leading cause of death for people aged ten to twenty-four years, the second leading cause of death among young people aged five to twenty-nine and the third leading cause of death among people aged thirty to forty-four years.

Every six seconds someone is killed or maimed on the world's roads. Road crashes kill 1.2 million people every year and injure or disable as many as 50 million more and it is estimated that road traffic deaths will increase by 80% in low and middle-income countries by 2020. APA
