Despite the growing effectiveness of the combat of Azerbaijan's Interior Ministry with illegal drug trafficking, the Ministry of Internal Affairs does not rule out possible continuation of illegal drug transit via Azerbaijan.

According to Novosti-Azerbaijan, the due announcement was made by Deputy Interior Minister of Azerbaijan Oruj Zalov at a conference on the program of combat with drugs in the South Caucasus.

"Greater part of drugs comes to the occupied lands of our country from Iran", noted he.

The deputy minister said that this way of drug trafficking will be closed following the liberation of the occupied lands.

"The drugs of Afghan origin are transported to the developed countries via Azerbaijan. In 2006 Afghanistan produced 4500 tons of heroine and in 2007 8,000", said hr.

According to Zalov, the law enforcement bodies of Azerbaijan confiscated over 10 kilograms of drugs from criminals on Tuesday morning.

It should be noted that the presentation of the beginning of the fifth stage of the joint Souith Caucasus Anti-drug program was held in Park Inn hotel in Baku.

The program is intended for 2007-2012 and is implemented by the UNDP, EU and Azerbaijani government.

during the implementation of the four previous stages of the program, the EU countries assisted to the Azerbaijani Frontier Service and Interior Ministry in provision of modern equipment. The fifth stage envisions a propaganda, strengthening of cooperation and exchange of experience between the state bodies of the South Caucasus in combat with drug spread.
