29 April 2008 [13:11] - Today.Az
The second conference "Azerbaijani and Turkish Press" started in Baku today.

The event is attended by leaders of the journalism organizations of Azerbaijan and Turkey and editors-in-chief of mass medias.

Aflatun Amashev, chairman of the Azerbaijan Council for Press, speaking at the conference noted that the first conference of the kind was held in April of 2006 and the event participants discussed differences and similarities between the Azerbaijani and Turkish press.

"The history of press starts in the late 19th century in both countries. Yet, the Turkish media has passed a long stage of development and turned into a remunerative business. The overall turnover of Turkish press makes up $1 bln", said Amashov.

He said Azerbaijani independent press is relatively young and is currently on the way of development.

"There are numerous problems which require settlement. Among them there are social problems of journalists", said he.

Amashov noted that the Council for Press has held a monitoring of Turkish press in April regarding the articles and information on Azerbaijan. It was revealed that as of April 28 the Turkish press published 1,175 articles about Azerbaijan and most of them were of positive content.

Nazim Isayev, deputy chief of the sociopolitical department of the Azerbaijan's Presidential office, noted that the country's legislation on mass media is the most democratic not only in the CIS but also among the countries of Eastern Europe.

"All conditions have been created for the activity of mass medias. Yet, today the main problem is the professionalism of journalists. The deficit of specialists is especially felt at TV channels. This is a problem which requires effective steps", N.Isayev noted.

Salih Melek, general director on press and information, noted that such measures enable to find similarities between the Azerbaijani and Turkish journalism.

He noted that development of press allows to learn news from all over the world.

Turkish ambassador to Azerbaijan Hulusi Kilich announced that press should protect national interests.

"Newspapers should not publish articles, lowering the state in the eyes of the world society", said he.

Within a day, the conference participants will discuss the relations of press and politics, legislation in the sphere of press, professional ethics and ways of information supply.
