The court hearing on the case of homosexual Sergey Strekalin was held in the Nasimi district court of Baku, presided by judge Shahin Abdullayev.

He is charged with knifing Azadlyg newspaper correspondent Agil Halil, reports Day.Az with reference to the Institute for Reporters' Freedom and Safety.

Speaking in the court, state prosecutor Eldar Khamzayev announced that A.Halil gave contradicting testimonies to the court and stressed importance of his participation in the process.

Strekalin's defender Akif Khalilov said Halil's participation in the court hearing is important.

"If Agil Halil does not want to attend the court, he should be brought here in the lawful manner", said Khalilov.

Halil's defender Elchin Sadykhov said his defendant will not take part in the process saying that Strekalin did not knife Halil.

The court passed a decision about the forced bringing of Halil to the court.

In line with the materials of the case, correspondent Agil Halil was knifed in the chest on March 13.

Serget Strekalin was brought to trial under articles 127.1 (deliberate causing of minor harm to health) and 234.1 (illegal production, purchase, storing, transportation or sale of drugs, psychotropic substances or precursors) of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan.

Strekalin got acquainted with Agil Halil in 2005 near Ganjlik metro station. They had sexual talks and then had sexual relationships.

It should be noted that Halil was brutally beaten in Baku on February 22 as he was taking photos in the olive garden. The journalist had his finger broken. During the investigation, the persons, accused of fight, rejected the fact of beating the journalist.
