New mosque must be built far from city center to provide for normal functioning of Ilahiyyat mosque near the Baku State University (BSU), BSU rector Abel Maharramov said at a press conference.

In late May, BSU appealed respective bodies claiming that mosque's activities hinder lesson at the university. Mosque was closed for a time being after that.

Maharramov said Ilahiyyat can host 250-300 visitors. Up to 8,000 people assembled at the mosque recently.

"Mosque's visitors sometimes occupied an area of one kilometer. Also azan which was played via loud-speaker hindered lessons at the university,' he said.

He said the mosque was built in 1991-1993. It has nothing to do with the BSU.
