Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Culture considers it possible to create a cultural channel under one of the local TV channels.

"We would like the cultural channel to be independent. However, if currently there is no technical, financial and creative potential to establish an independent TV channel, the cultural channel may be opened under one of the local TV channels. If this channel broadcasts six hours a day, this will be sufficient," Nizami Jafarov, chairman of the parliamentary committee, said.

The Azerbaijani National Television and Radio Council (NTRC) supports the opening of the cultural channel, which will be broadcasting nationwide. The opening of such channel requires considerable funds, Chairman of the NTRC Nushirevan Maharramli said earlier. "Therefore, even if the issue remains on the agenda, the new channel will not be opened soon," Maharramli added.

Jafarov said opening of a cultural channel is necessary for many reasons. "Now, the Azerbaijani culture is developing very fast, integrates into global community and there is a need to promote a global culture in Azerbaijan. Propaganda of the films shot recently in Azerbaijan is not so active," he said.

TV channels increased greatly the work in the field of propaganda of the art and culture, but this is not enough. "Besides the work conducted in the field of culture in Azerbaijan, it is necessary to carry out work on cultural education," Jafarov said.
