Inauguration of the “Istanbul - European Capital of Culture 2010” Year of cultural events will take place at Halic Congress Center of Istanbul, Turkey, on January 16. Azeri minister for culture and tourism Abulfaz Garayev will reportedly attend the event.

Also the opening ceremonies will be held in other 6 public places of Istanbul.

The Halic Congress Center will host 65-minute “Alluring Istanbul” opening night to welcome almost 5 thousand guests from a number of foreign countries.

Turkish President Abdullah Gul and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan will open the “Istanbul - European Capital of Culture 2010” Year.

Today Abulfaz Garayev is to depart for Istanbul.

The European Capital of Culture is a city designated by the European Union for a period of one year during which it is given a chance to showcase its cultural life and cultural development.

A number of European cities have used the City of Culture Year to transform their cultural base and, in doing so, the way in which they are viewed internationally.
