In 2009, Azerbaijani courts reviewed 96,129 cases 75, 269 of which were of civil nature, Supreme Court chairman Ramiz Rzayev said at a meeting on outcomes of 2009.

"During this period 14,000 of criminal and military cases were reviewed, 4,862 of which were considered by the appeal courts, which makes up five percent of the total number of cases. About 12-13 percent of cases were reviewed by the courts of appeal," Rzayev said.

He said the judges should be independent inwardly and should not be shunned by the adoption of independent fair decisions.

"A judge must convince opposite side on justice of its decision. The independence of judges depends on themselves," Rzayev said.
