On Saturday, The European Azerbaijan Society (TEAS) sponsored the ConservativeHome reception at the Conservative Spring Forum. ConHome was celebrating its fifth anniversary, during which time it has built up huge support amongst Conservative members and supporters.
Senior Conservatives, including members of the Shadow Cabinet, were entertained by Sabina Rakcheyeva and her ensemble. Sabina was Azerbaijan’s first Juilliard graduate, and her music fuses western classical idioms with the improvisatory elements of Azerbaijani Mugham. Over 300 guests attended the reception during the course of the evening.
The guest of honour was the Shadow Business Secretary, the famously jazz-loving Rt Hon Ken Clarke QC MP. As Chancellor under Margaret Thatcher, Mr Clarke laid the foundations for the longest period of economic growth in UK history.
Mr Clarke spoke optimistically about the prospects for expansion under a future Conservative government. He also spoke warmly of the time he had spent in Baku, during a visit to Azerbaijan, and expressed his admiration for the music of Sabina and her fellow musicians.
All those in attendance enjoyed the evening, taking away information on Azerbaijan and gaining a valuable insight into the country and its rich culture.
