Fencing World Championship to be held in Azerbaijan will be a milestone, marking the beginning of a new history of fencing in Azerbaijan, the International Fencing Federation president Alishir Usmanov told media today.

About 1,565 sportsmen from 87 countries are expected to participate at the world championships in fencing among young people to be held in Baku April 2-10.

He said that it is necessary to revive it in such a historical part of the world as Azerbaijan, where using the blade was always a special skill for men.

Usmanov expressed hope that the Azerbaijani Federation will be once again among the world leaders in fencing, as previously Azerbaijani athletes became world champions. I think that it is time to revive this tradition in the 21 century, Usmanov said.

Armenia will not take part in the championship because of the conflict with Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh.

"Sport brings people together. Each country should participate in such prestigious championships," the Federation president said, commenting Armenian sportsmen's non-partciaption in the world championship in Baku.

Official opening of the championship will be held in the Sports-Concert Complex named after Heydar Aliyev April 2 at 06:00 p.m. In the first three days teenagers will compete, the next three days - young people. Afterwards, team competitions will be held.
