St. Petersburg commemorated the memory of victims died during the tragic events in the Azerbaijani history in 1918-1919.
Representatives of the Azerbaijani diaspora, diplomats, academics, young people and journalists who have become participants of the conference "Day of Remembrance of the tragic events in the history of Azerbaijan in 1918-1919" gathered in the House of Jewish Culture March 31," the press service of the Azerbaijani Consulate General in Saint- Petersburg said.
The conference was opened by Azerbaijani Consul General Gudsi Osmanov. He spoke about the history of 1918-1919 events, which led to the annexation of large territories of Azerbaijan by Armenia. Thousands of innocent Azerbaijanis, as well as representatives of other nations were killed during the March events as a result of Armenian nationalists' actions.
The world community has not adequately recognized and appreciated events of 1918-1919. This led to the fact that mass deportation of Azerbaijanis began in 1948-1950. More than 100,000 civilians were expelled from the territory of Armenia. Forced eviction was completed in 1988, and a devastating tragedy in Khojaly in 1992. While the criminals are not convicted by the international community, these events will repeate again.
A new book by a famous Russian writer, historian and public figure Yuri Pompeyev "Karabakh Diary" was presented at the conference. In his speech the author spoke about the idea of creating a book based on real events. He also shared his impressions of large-scale economic development of Azerbaijan, made as a result of his recent trip to Baku in August last year.
Chairman of the National Cultural Autonomy of St. Petersburg's Azerbaijanis Vagif Mamishev called on Azerbaijani youth to represent their people for the successful integration into Russian society.
All participants stressed the need to restore historical justice towards the liberation of occupied Azerbaijani territories.
The photo exhibition "Destroyed monuments in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan" and the documentary film "The cultural heritage of Karabakh region of Azerbaijan: yesterday and today" were organized within the event.
Daily local newspaper "Evening Petersburg" published Consul General's statement about the history of 1918-1919 events. REN-Petersburg TV channel demonstrated video about the conference in the news program.
