Archeological excavations carried out in Gazma area in north-western Balakan region of Azerbaijan has revealed a number of items dating back to pre-Islamic times in Azerbaijan.

More than 30 graves of pre-Islamic period, as well as the ruins of the walls of ancient settlements have been unearthed. Moreover, an expedition team has discovered a few necropolis dating back to VII-IV centuries in the "Khanjar itan Gobu" area near Kortala village of the region.

Excavations in two necropolis revealed tens of ceramic dishes, reflecting the ancient culture and creativity of Caucasian Albania. Scientists found earlier burials here, which were mainly carried out by cremation. In addition, a large number of jewelry made of stone has been found.

Striking is the fact that the dishes found in the necropolis was decorated with ornaments in the form of buta (Azerbaijan’s national ornamental motif) and a moon.
