Director General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has praised Azerbaijani first lady, UNESCO and ISESCO Goodwill Ambassador Mehriban Aliyeva's role in highlighting problems of preschool age children on the global scale.
Speaking to a press conference following a Moscow-hosted world conference on early childhood care and education, Irina Bokova said: “I praise what Mehriban Aliyeva has been doing to attract the world community`s attention to problem faced by preschool age children.”
In response to an AzerTAc correspondent`s question how she assesses the Azerbaijan-UNESCO cooperation, and Mehriban Aliyeva`s role in particular, Bokova said: “I`m very pleased that Mrs. Aliyeva accepted our invitation to attend the conference. Mrs. Aliyeva has been a goodwill ambassador since 2006, and I praise very much what she has done in this capacity to attract the international community`s attention towards problems of preschool age children.”
“We attach a special emphasis on the role of our goodwill ambassadors. And the role of Mehriban Aliyeva is of particular importance because she mobilizes not only the interest, but also the political will in her work.”
The UNESCO Director General also touched upon her recent visit to Azerbaijan, praising her meeting with President Ilham Aliyev.
“During the meetings in Baku I saw not only Azerbaijan`s striving and desire for the cooperation with UNESCO, but also how much importance the country places to the issue. I respect these aspirations, and praise Azerbaijan`s active position, and the country`s striving for the cooperation and interest towards the conference.”
The main objective of the Moscow conference, under the motto “Building the Wealth of Nations”, is to take stock of the progress of member states towards achieving the education for all goal.
