Azerbaijani Education Minister Misir Mardanov said he cannot solve the problems of students illegally enrolled to the Azerbaijani International University (AIU).

"Its out of my competence, to decide their faith," Mardanov told journalists. According to Mardanov, the university had illegally enrolled more than 1,000 students.

The Education Ministry carries out activities within its mandate, he said.

"The Education Ministry suspended the activities of the university and is engaged in transfer of students, who were legally studying in the AIU, to other universities. We are not engaged in addressing of other issues," Mardanov said.

The IUA was issued state registration in 1998. This year, the ministry refused to renew the university's license due to serious shortcomings in the school's activities. A group of students, who were admitted to the university not passing the test exams by the State Commission for Student Admission (SCSA) and graduated it,  appealed to the Ministry to restore their rights. They demand the return of money paid for tuition, some students also require transfer to other universities of the country.
