Short text messages sent via mobile phones are the reason behind increasing illiteracy among Azerbaijani teenagers, Azerbaijan’s education expert Rufat Aliyev says.

"Because of SMS, students in Baku get out of the habit of speaking and writing correctly,” the expert added.

Youth slang, various reductions and a total lack of punctuation are characteristic for short messages, expert says. “This kind of communication affects literacy.”

Children get mobile phones at their 12-13 years while some get it even at the first grade. Almost all teenagers in Baku are users of various mobile services. The most active users can text 15-25 messages a day, the expert underscored.
