Currently, an archeological expedition of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences is working on Sheherburnu site near Kura River within Samukh region, where an ancient city of Ganja used to be.

The excavations have unearthed crockery and items of handicraft production, which suggest that Ganja existed in the III-IV centuries BC and even earlier.

The expedition leader Arif Mammadov said remains of an ancient port and buildings, where traders stopped and goods were stored, have been found here. The finding also include VIII-IX century dishes in which vegetables fiber were used to obtain paint.

In general, findings relating to antiquity and early Middle Ages make majority. All this indicates that in ancient times Ganja was located at Kura. Archaeological research in this area is still underway.
