The Azerbaijani embassy in Japan has not yet received any information about the Azerbaijani citizens affected by earthquake, Azerbaijani Ambassador to Japan Azer Huseynov told Trend
Errors occurred in the telephone connections in Tokyo following the quake and the mobile communications and the Internet turned off.
The Azerbaijani embassy is now working in emergency mode and if necessary, ready to render any assistance to fellow citizens, he said.
A 8.8 magnitude earthquake hit Japan's northeastern Honshu island on Friday. The tremors were felt in Tokyo. The epicenter was located 382 kilometers northeast of Tokyo, its center lies at a depth of 10 kilometers. The siren was turned on in Tokyo warning about the beginning of a strong earthquake and a female voice calling for calm, in the case of the continuation and strengthening of aftershocks urged people to gather in specific locations.
Huseyn said over 50 Azerbaijani citizens temporarily live and study in Japan, of them about 30 lives in Tokyo and the rest in other cities.
