11 March 2011 [15:55] - Today.Az
The number of women among the Azerbaijani population has declined from 51% percent to 46%, according to the State Statistics Committee. The reason for this is domestic violence, Azerbaijani Ombudsman Elmira Suleymanova said at a conference on the prevention of domestic violence today organized at the OSCE Baku Office.
"The destruction of an unborn fetus due to its gender is the main reason for the increased number of men. Various forms of domestic violence are closely related to human rights violations. The basis of these violations is various forms of discrimination, especially gender discrimination," Suleymanova said.
The Ombudsman considers it important to analyze domestic violence and to create a specific mechanism foro fighting the problem.
"Women do not have as many opportunities to find work as men, so from an economic point of view they become dependent on men and stay away from the decision-making process," Suleymanova said.
According to the statistics for 2008-2009, there was an increased number of crimes against women and children, while a decline was observed in 2010.
