Azerbaijani students will further continue their education in Turkey.
The Turkish national education ministry said Turkey had started the Grand Student Project since academic year of 1992-1993 for assisting the former Soviet Turkic-speaking countries to meet their needs in human resources.
On March 24, 2010, according to the bill 5978, the Committee on Work with Turkish People Abroad and Turkic-speaking Countries was established in Turkey to coordinate the work of relevant organizations of those countries. The Committee determined the number of Azerbaijani contingent for the academic year of 2011-2012 and informed the Education Ministry of Azerbaijan about that.
The Turkish education officials said Azerbaijani Education Ministry informed them about the specialties it needs and the Turkish Committee changed the list of specialties according to the Azerbaijan’s requirements and sent the new list to the Azerbaijani Education Minister.
Chief of the international department of the Azerbaijan’s Education Minister Gulu Novruzov said that they accepted the number of contingent required by Azerbaijan, which could meet its needs in this field.
Turkey decided to select the specialties and to determine the number of student contingent to get high education at the Turkish universities itself this year. Turkey suspended the admission of Azerbaijani students within scholarship program on medicine and engineering and offered programs on literature, theology, pedagogy, which are not acceptable for Azerbaijan. Considering it as a violation of the protocol signed between the education ministries of Azerbaijan and Turkey, Azerbaijan suspended the submission of applications for the Turkish universities.
Currently about 2500 Azerbaijani students are getting education at the Turkish universities within the scholarship programs and at their own charge.
