The former president of the International Mountaineering and Climbing Federation, Mike Mortimer, who is on a visit to Baku at the invitation of Federation of Air and Extreme Sports of Azerbaijan (FAIREX), on Tuesday attended the opening of the ClimBaku center of rock climbing, FAIREX told Trend today.
The event was also attended by Minister of Youth and Sports of Azerbaijan Azad Rahimov and President of Federation of Air and Extreme Sports of Azerbaijan Huseyngulu Baghirov.
The presentation of the ClimBaku climbing center's website was also held (www.climbaku.az).
At the end of the event Rahimov, Baghirov and Mortimer presented the winners of the boulderinq contest "Umid-2", held on April 21-22, with FA?REX diploma, the third grade of rock climbing and appropriate insignia.
It should be noted that as part of the visit, Mortimer in the FA?REX office met with active athletes of the Federation, Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports Ismayil Ismayilov and vice-president of the National Olympic Committee Chingiz Huseynzade. During the meeting the sides talked about the attention to the sport in Azerbaijan, a positive development in this area, that in recent years young people pay more attention to extreme sports.
Mortimer, on his part, noted that Azerbaijan occupies a prominent place in the international arena, Azerbaijan thanks to the natural conditions has ample opportunities for climbing development, and also appreciated the increased interest in climbing of the Azerbaijani youth. He also said that Azerbaijan has ample opportunities for holding sports contests at the highest level.
Federation of Air and Extreme Sports in Azerbaijan has been since 2010 an active member of the International Federation of Sport Climbing.
