The Public Union for Observation of Detention Places addressed the Georgian Ministry of Corrections and Legal Aid.
The Public Union said that Ahmad Abilov, who is serving in a prison in correctional labor colony ¹2 situated in Kutaisi city of Georgia, appealed to the Georgian ombudsperson due to the fact of torture he faced in above-mentioned facility.
The appeal says that two supervisors of the detention facility, where he served a prison, subjected him to physical and moral torture. Representatives of Georgian ombudsperson visited the facility. Revealed the facts shown by prisoner Abilov, the torture traces on his body, his co-prisoners confirmed this fact. Ombudsman Giorgi Tugushi appealed to the Prosecutor’s Office with the recommendation to launch the investigation on infliction of bodily harm to Abilov and holding of forensic psychiatric examination. In addition, the Ombudsman, taking into account the fact that Abilov can undergo repeated tortures because of his conversion, sent a letter to the Penitentiary Department of Georgia with a request to transfer the prisoner to another facility.
The Public Union for Observation of Detention Places expressed concern over our compatriot Abilov’s exposure to inhuman treatment and his current state: “nobody should be exposed to torture, inhuman treatment or punishment – this prohibition is a demand of several international conventions and those, who committed the torture, must be punished”.
In its appeal, the Public Union for Observation of Detention Places asked the Georgian Ministry of Corrections and Legal Aid to create conditions for conduction of monitoring in the facility, where he is kept, as well as informing the Georgian Prosecutor’s Office about the result of investigation carried out on the fact.
