Azadliq makes statement on life sentence of Azerbaijani Army officer

17 April 2006 [07:56] - TODAY.AZ
The opposition Azadliq alliance issued a statement related to the imprisonment of Ramil Safarov for murdering Armenian army officer.

According to APA, the alliance said in the statement that in such situation processes should be assessed objectively and the way out should be found. The authors of the statement admit that Ramil Safarov committed grave crime and add that it is unacceptable to assess this act as heroism.

"However, it's true that the verdict on Ramil Safarov is unfair. First, while investigating the charges against Ramil Safarov the circumstance when the crime was committed, psychological condition of the accused, his being young, this being his first crime and other mitigating circumstances were not taken into account. This fact shows that democratic states guarantee the rule of law for their citizens only and demonstrate double standards when it comes to foreign citizens," the alliance claimed.

The alliance thinks that such unfair verdict is due to the lack of right tactics in the defense process of Safarov, and our authorities having been indifferent to our officer's fate.

"Since the Head of the Azerbaijani Diaspora in Hungary says he's unaware of our citizen's trial in Budapest there is nothing to say about it," the statement concludes.

The alliance underlined that Ramil's fate should not be approached as a tragedy of a person but as moral duty of Azerbaijani state and people, and all means should be used to commute the punishment.
