The writer, who came into the literature with a book of short stories entitled "Letters from the village" in 1939, had experienced himself in many literary genres, from articles, essays, and stories, to novels, scripts, and plays.
Afandiyev with his poetic language became one of the beloved writers of the twentieth century for Azerbaijanis. Born in one of the most picturesque parts of Azerbaijan, Fizuli, located in Karabakh, he portrayed the real life with all its bright and dark sides.
Notwithstanding being the writer of the Soviet period, Afanliyev did not bow down in front of the difficulties, calling his readers to fight for the human rights, freedom and independence. His creativity basing on the high humanitarian ideals will not lose its actuality even on the future.
In his works, Afandiyev popularized the ideas of "Azerbaijanism" vividly wrote about the spirituality of this people.
Afandiyev used to said, "The writer, if he is a citizen, a patriot of his country, should be the owner of a large heart, the high human qualities. Only in this case the writer can affect the feelings of the people, awake love, compassion and mercy in them."
The most prominent contribution to Azerbaijani literature Afandiyev made in drama, and took the significant place in the formation of the modern aspect of the Azerbaijani theatre, where a whole galaxy of prominent Azerbaijani theater workers was formed.
The master of a psychological drama has showed the whole generation through the prism of individual destiny.
