Musa Panahov: "Tension of US-Iran relations may delay the North-South transport project"

14 April 2006 [08:00] - TODAY.AZ
Russia examining the Gezvin-Resht-Anzali-Astara railroad project prepared by the Ministry of Transport of Iran under the North-South project issued several remarks concerning the project.

Those remarks are mainly related to the mistakes allowed in the direction of the railroad, technical substantiation and evaluation of the project's value. APA was informed about it by the Deputy Minister of Transport Musa Panahov.

The technical-economic substantiation of the project has already been prepared. The final documents will be discussed at a joint meeting of representatives of the transport Ministries of Russia, Azerbaijan and Iran soon. According to Mr.Panahov, the Russian side offered its rails and sleepers to be used in construction in order for the building to cost cheaper. It is also not excluded that construction of the railroad may delay because of tension of the US-Iran relations.

Mr.Panahov said that according to the North-South project, Azerbaijan must construct 14 km railroad in its territory. 8.3 km of it must be the main railway line taking to the border, and other part of the railway line must be distance roads.

It should be noted that construction of the main railway will be implemented in the territory of Iran. The length of the railway line to connect Gezvin-Resht-Anzali and Astara will be 360 km.

It should be reminded that Russia was the initiator of creation of the North-South transport corridor to connect Russia with India. Cargo to be transported by this corridor is forecasted to be 10 million ton initially, and then volume of cargo to be transported is predicted to increase twice or more.
