The social network Instagram has started to lower the video quality for non-popular videos.
This was stated by the head of Instagram and the Threads social network Adam Mosseri, Azernews reports.
He said that the platform strives to show videos of the highest quality, however, if the video does not gain views for a long time, its quality will decrease.
According to him, this decision is made on an aggregate level, not on an individual level, so as not to affect the video quality for individual users. He also noted that more popular authors receive videos in much higher quality, which is associated with intensive encoding and expensive storage of large files.
At the same time, A. Mosseri stressed that the difference in quality is insignificant and does not have a big impact on audience engagement. Some users expressed concern that this approach could create advantages for popular authors, but the head of Instagram assured that in practice it does not matter much, since engagement depends more on the content of the video than on its quality.
