Turkiye has left behind an important milestone in its journey towards national submarine production. Designed by STM engineers, Turkiye's first domestic and national submarine for special operations and attack purposes, the STM500, has been successfully completed with its robust hull test production and quality test processes.
With completely domestic infrastructure and facilities, the test blocks of a war submarine were produced domestically for the first time in Turkiye in the civil industry. STM General Manager Özgür Güleryüz explained the submarine produced with domestic facilities.
"The submarine issue is a really difficult issue. When you look at it, it is a product that has the same complexity as a spacecraft. The number of countries in the world that can design and develop their own submarines is really very few. STM started its activities in the maritime field with the modernization of the AY Class submarines that our Naval Forces has and modernized two submarines.
We continue our work as the leading contractor in the modernization of our Navy's Preveze and Gur Class submarines. We are modernizing the French submarines that Pakistan has. We have also made critical localizations in the New Type Submarine, Reis Class, which is the most modern submarine in our Navy. A very serious accumulation of knowledge has been created in STM.
"Thus, we have completed the design of the first domestic and national submarine, which we call STM500. On the one hand, we are trying to help develop the competencies to build submarines, especially in the civilian sector. On the other hand, we are working on the STM500 project. We want to realize STM500 very quickly and make our country one of the rare countries in the world that can design and produce its own submarines."
