Riga has hosted a conference on the role of diaspora in Azerbaijanis` integration into the Latvian society.
The conference was co-organized by Azerbaijan's State Committee for Work with Diaspora and Latvia-Azerbaijan Cultural Center.
Opening the conference, the center's chair, member of the council for national minorities under the Latvian president, Roman Aliyev and Azerbaijan's ambassador to Latvia Tofig Zulfugarov stressed the importance of the conference.
Latvian MP Boris Tsilevich praised Azerbaijan's economic and humanitarian development. He also touched upon the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
Tsilevich praised the activity of the Azerbaijani diaspora in discussions on the policy of European Union, noting “this could play a significant role in the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh dispute.”
"We have always supported Azerbaijan's integration into Europe," he said.
MP Oskars Kastens emphasized the European Parliament's May 20 resolution, described it as “an important step” in the Azerbaijan-EU cooperation.
He called Latvian representatives in EU to support Azerbaijan's position. Suraddin Humbatov, an official at the Azerbaijan State Committee for Work with Diaspora, highlighted the role of diaspora organizations in the process of integration.
