Quadruple-limb transplantation failed

27 February 2012 [20:52] - TODAY.AZ

All limbs have been removed from Turkish man Sevket Cavdar, the world's first quadruple-limb transplant patient, after his body refused to accept the new appendages following surgery over the weekend, Anatolia news agency reported.

Cavdar's heart and vascular systems failed to sustain the new limbs, doctors in Ankara said, adding that an operation was conducted immediately to remove the three remaining limbs today following the removal of one of the legs the previous day.  Cavdar is still in intensive care.

Turkish surgeons were forced to remove one leg from Cavdar yesterday due to complications and Cavdar was stable ever since.

A separate patient who received a full face transplant yesterday – the second such transplant in Turkish history following the first operation last month – is still in fair condition.  The operations were conducted by 54 doctors and 128 health personnel.
