FIDE Grand Prix's Baku stage wraps up

Israeli Boris Gelfand and Italian Fabiano Caruana have finished as joint main winners of the Grand Prix in Baku, FIDE Grand Prix Baku 2014's website reported.

Baku stage of Chess Grand Prix FIDE (World Chess Federation) was underway in Azerbaijan's capital on October 1-15.

Five of the six parties in the decisive round in Baku ended up with a draw. Only Russian Alexander Grischuk managed to beat Cuban Leinier Dominguez.

Italian and Israeli masters gained 6.5 points out of 11 points. On aggregate, Caruana took the first place. The second place went to Gelfand. Russian grandmaster Alexander Grischuk with 6 points took the third place.

Places from fourth to eighth were taken respectively by Russian Sergey Karjakin, Peter Svidler, Evgeny Tomashevsky and American Hikaru Nakamura.

Azerbaijani grandmaster Teimour Radjabov stood at ninth place with 5.5 points. Local Shakhriyar Mamedyarov and Uzbek Rustam Kasimdzhanov, who scored 5 points each, took the 10 and 11th positions. Russian Dmitry Andreikin with 4.5 points settled for 12th place, and Leinier Dominguez closed the Crosstable.

The official awarding and closing ceremony of the Baku stage was held on October 14.

Azerbaijan's Chess Federation President Elman Rustamov noted the fast growing of sports in the country in recent years, where chess is taking its deserved place.

It was also noted, that Azerbaijan's late grandmaster Vugar Gashimov won the first Grand Prix tournament held in Azerbaijan in 2008.

The winners of the tournament received 35,000 euros. Winners of the first and second places in the four stages will have the chance to fight for the Champion.

The next two stages will be held in Tashkent and Tehran.
