Azerbaijan asks US to become active in resolution of Karabakh conflict

19 May 2005 [14:13] - TODAY.AZ
"Azerbaijan regards the United States as its strategic ally," Safar Abiyev, the Azerbaijani Defense Minister, said in a meeting with the US Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Reno Harnish, and Capestown group.
He noted the US assistance in the implementation of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan main export oil pipeline. "We'd like the United States to boost its activity in the resolution of the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh," the  Minister stressed. Abiyev expressed the concerns of the Azerbaijan people in connection with delay in the repeal of Section 907 of the Freedom Support Act that the U.S. Congress adopted in regard to Azerbaijan in 1002.

Abiyev informed the guests on the establishment of the Armenian state in the South Caucasus and how it had become expanded at the expense of the Azerbaijan lands. "Armenia's current policy targets continuing the occupation policy, falsification of the history, exchange of world community, introduction of Armenians as the suffered nation. I reiterate that Azerbaijan will never yield even the smallest part of its territory to anyone. Unless the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict is resolved, it will be impossible to establish stability in the Caucasus," Abiyev underscored.

Harnish stated that a visit by Capestown group testifies that the United States is a strategic ally of Azerbaijan. Mentioning US President George Bush's speech in Tbilisi the diplomat underlined that the United States will always support the independence of Caucasian nations. "The US will continue the military cooperation with Azerbaijan. We will do all possible for repeal of the Section 907 of the Freedom Support Act," the US Ambassador underscored.
