Burdzhanadze seeks GUAM support in opposition with Moscow

15 October 2006 [23:08] - TODAY.AZ
Georgian Parliament Speaker Nino Burdzhanadze urged Georgia's GUAM partners (Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova) to give active support to Tbilisi in the confrontation with Moscow.

She strongly criticized steps taken by the Russian administration against Georgia at the third meeting of the GUAM Parliamentary Assembly in Chisinau on Sunday.

"The current situation in the Russia-Georgia relations, naturally, worries all GUAM countries. Each of them thinks that the crisis must be resolved," Burdzhanadze said.

Her appeal did not receive a desired response, though. Moldovan Speaker Marian Lupu, Azerbaijani Speaker Oktai Asadov and Ukrainian Vice-Speaker Adam Martynyuk said that GUAM countries should primarily intensify trade and economic cooperation. "Bearing in mind economic difficulties in our countries, we should draft economic and energy cooperation projects," Lupu said. Itar-Tass
