German Ambassador: "Reforms must be implemented to approach Azerbaijan's EU membership"

18 January 2007 [00:45] - TODAY.AZ
"No country and as well as Azerbaijan, where the stereotypes of Soviet period remain, can not be admitted to the EU, in this case it is difficult to speak of Azerbaijan's EU membership," said German ambassador Per Stankina.

Commenting on Adam Waddams' ideas that Azerbaijan will not be adopted to the EU in 50 years, the ambassador told the APA that some reforms should be carried out in some spheres to reduce this period.

"Firstly, these are the issues concerning democracy, human rights, freedom of press and education. Besides, the freedom of economic activity should be felt in the country. That is why, there are hundreds of items in 30-page Action Plan, sighed in the frame of New Neighborhood Policy of EU, considering the simplification of the conformation of Azerbaijan to European standards," he added.

The ambassador said that though the number of EU membership countries increases, enlargement process will be continued.

He stressed that the organization that he represents, at the present discusses the issues concerning Montenegro.
