Azerbaijan will raise marriage age for women

31 August 2009 [15:23] - TODAY.AZ
Marriage age for women will be raised in Azerbaijan, chairman of the parliament’s committee for social policy Hadi Rajabli said.
He said that amendments will be possibly made to the Family Code in the fall session of the parliament.

Rajabli said the marriage age will be increased from 17 to 18.

“This issue is being discussed broadly. Girls should be ready for marriage both physically and morally,” he said.

Rajabli said according to the legislation, girls will be allowed to marry at the age of 16-17 only in exceptional cases.

“Girls will be allowed to marry at the age of 17 only in exceptional cases. Girls at the age of 16 will be allowed to marry only in case of pregnancy,” he said.

Hadi Rajabli said one of the amendments to the Family Code will imply requiring health certificate before marriage.

“It should be determined for what diseases the health certificate will be required,” he said.
