U.S. senator John McCain, who arrived in Batumi last night, launched the meetings in Georgian this morning. Presently, he meets with the Georgian opposition.
This will be a free and informal meeting, Georgian Republican Party Chairman and Co-chair of the "Alliance for Georgia" David Usupashvili said before the meeting. The agenda of the meeting has not been identified.
"Senator McCain has deep knowledge of Georgia's geopolitical issues," he said. "Moreover, he has positive attention towards our country. However, since the last visit he has much overrated in the internal politics and democratic institutions in Georgia. So, we are waiting for an interesting meeting." The chairman also noted that the meeting will also mull security issues of the country.
"He is not a member of the ruling U.S team. Despite this, he has a great influence on the U.S. foreign policy. His views on Georgia's security are always interesting," he added.
Georgia's President Mikheil Saakashvili, who is also in Batumi, will receive McCain following his meeting with opposition.
After these meetings, McCain will visit Zugdidi, where he will meet with the E.U observers. He is also expected to meet with the refugees who were forced to flee their homes after the Russian-Georgian conflict.
McCain will leave Georgia in the mid-day.
