China Delight: The world's biggest chocolate show - PHOTOS

11 February 2010 [20:25] - TODAY.AZ
The site of the Beijing Olympics, the National Stadium will become a chocolate wonderland that will last until April 10th when it will get too warm to maintain the most amazing chocolate artifacts ever known to man. As lovers of chocolate, the Chinese have outdone themselves with this presentation, no longer content to make extraordinary chocolate confections.

At a cost of more than ten million dollars, the new creative and cultural center will host the 20,000-square-meter “World Chocolate Wonderland” with five indoor areas and two outdoor sites inside the Beijing Olympic Green. It will display more than 1,000 chocolate and candy-based handicrafts, including replicas of 560 terra cotta warriors and a 10-meter Great Wall.

“People could make their own chocolate artifacts with the help of professionals. I’m happy to be among those who lead the trend… We try to bridge the East and the West by integrating chocolate with China’s cultural characteristics,” says Zheng Yaoting, the show’s director.

Costing more than $10 million, the show consumed 80 tons of chocolate.  The chocolate-themed park will last until April 10 when the weather will begin to get warm. It represents an attempt to utilize the venues that were once a part of 2008’s Olympic games. According to Olympic Green’s official website, this spot is one of Beijing’s most favored tourist destinations, receiving 2.56 million visitors during last year’s week-long National Holiday.

Also known as the Bird’s Nest, Olympic Green introduced the snowy winter wonderland between December and February of this year. In order to do this, authorities were forced to close and renovate the National Aquatics Center, or Water Cube, last October until mid 2010 when the center will re-open (after the chocolate show) to international competitions, aquatic sports and recreational visits.
