Child believes he is a corpse, after surviving a horrible train accident

10 August 2010 [13:22] - TODAY.AZ
Post-traumatic stress disorder is a terrifying thing. It could permanently disable you, preventing you from living a healthy, normal life. Families end up broken, lives end up destroyed. If you’re young Pinaki, a seven-year-old boy who managed to survive the recent Jnaneswari Express disaster, living a healthy, normal life is not option when you firmly believe beyond a shadow of a doubt that you’re dead.

Shortly after the accident, the young boy’s parents noticed a marked difference in his behavior. He refused to eat and sleep, as these were all actions performed by the living. As a boy who has “turned in his soul,” to quote his father, such luxuries are not necessary. Worried more about the boy’s health and future than compensation from the accident, his parents have yet to take their son to a psychiatrist, preferring instead to see if Pinaki will snap out of his trance and finally realize he’s still alive.

The accident has resulted in a number of psychological changes among both those who survived and the relatives of the deceased. Some refuse to board a train again, a necessity for some who rely on it to pick up compensation checks. Thankfully, South Eastern Railway has been phenomenal in helping out those affected, going as far as bringing the checks to those who refuse to board a train again.

All in all, 148 people died in the horrible disaster, which occurred on May 28th, and to date eight individuals have been arrested. There is no word as to whether or not the young boy has snapped and realized he’s still alive, though I imagine the parents remain hopeful. They hope that once school resumes, seeing all of his friends will cause him to come back to the real world, as it were.
